Scholz Garten

1607 San Jacinto, 512/474-1958
Opened in 1866 by German immigrant August Scholz, this historic biergarten is the oldest operating business in Texas. Generations of state politicos and UT students have imbibed here. The garten itself holds over 500, while adjoining Saengerrunde Hall can seat 250 with a maximum occupancy of 600. Both have stages frequently rented out for special events. Saengerrunde plays host to a number of annual events, including the stein and sausage-swinging Austoberfest and a celebration of German-speaking composers called Beerthoven. The venue is owned by its namesake German singing society. Established in 1879, Austin Saengerrunde’s Maennerchor and Damenchor still perform today.
