Op-Ed Submission Staff Directory

Starting in 2020, The Austin Chronicle will publish opinion pieces on any topic.

On any topic?
Topics that are relevant to the Austin community, yes.

And anyone can write an op-ed?
Yes. We especially hope for op-ed writers with expertise in their chosen topic, and/or relevant, first-hand experience with the topic. Op-eds can range from policy proposals to personal essays – everything’s game.

However, if you’re selling something, the Opinion page is not the forum for that.

Note: While we do occasionally run op-eds submitted from out-of-state, we prioritize local authors.

Will I get paid for my op-ed?
No. If you’d like to pitch a story to The Austin Chronicle, you can use this submission form for freelance writers: austinchronicle.com/contact/pitch/

Would you rather write a letter to the editor?
You can do so here.

Can I submit an op-ed anonymously? How about under a pseudonym?
Unfortunately, no. We can only publish work that clearly states the author’s name.

Tell me more about op-ed requirements.
All work must be original to the author and unpublished elsewhere, in print or online. Please do not submit op-eds to us that are currently under consideration at other media outlets. Op-ed submissions must be 670 words or less.

The Opinion page is intended to be a place for opinion pieces, not reportage, press releases, candidate endorsements, or stump speeches. Op-eds may reference previously published studies, reports, and articles from reputable sources, but excerpts must be short and links must be included.

Ready to submit?

All fields are required.

We regret we cannot respond to all submissions. If we like your idea, we’ll be in touch. Opinion submissions may be lightly edited for publication. Questions? Email opinion@austinchronicle.com.
