How Do You Solve a Problem Like I-35?

In this week’s episode of The Austin Chronicle Show on KOOP Community Radio, we talk about the road most likely to inspire rage in you, and the battle currently raging about what to do with it next.

When it comes to dealing with the reviled Interstate 35, it seems the preferred option – for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), at least – is to widen the highway in its stretch through Downtown Austin, a plan that would involve razing businesses currently flanking the highway, including the Chronicle office. News Editor Mike Clark-Madison explains, both in this week’s issue and this week’s radio show, the ins and outs of all the plans on the table, while Chronicle Publisher Nick Barbaro offers his perspective as a business owner impacted by I-35’s potential rebuild.

In the second half of the program, I’m joined by Chronicle staff writer and “Faster Than Sound” columnist Rachel Rascoe, who talks about putting together the performer lineup for this weekend’s Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival.
