Davis Gallery: Bouff! The Big Tease
New work by B. Shawn Cox is always a delight for the eyes (and a few other senses), and here the masterful painter and arch wit brings a bounty of pop philosophy with a tinge of irony (and much big hair) – inspired by lore, social identity narratives, and childhood memories of his West Texas roots. FronteraFest 2023
Austin's longest-running and most beloved performance festival returns after a two-year pandemic hiatus, presenting the work – maybe cheesy, maybe brilliant, maybe goofy, maybe badass, always unique – of actors, artists, poets, dancers, and performers of all types from Austin and Texas and beyond. This year's festival features two different showcases. The Short Fringe (works of 25 minutes or less) will run the entirety of the festival, Tue.-Sat., Jan. 17-Feb. 18, at Hyde Park Theatre (511 W. 43rd). The highest-ranked performances each week get to return to the stage on Saturday for a Best of the Week showcase. The final week of the Short Fringe is reserved for Best of the Fest, which are pieces selected from each Best of the Week; there's also a Wild Card night of pieces that final week, selected by FronteraFest staff and crew. The BYOV (Bring Your Own Venue) showcase, on the other hand, runs Jan. 29-Feb. 4, at two places that aren't HPT – and we've got those listed separately for you. Lunar New Year: Old Thousand
Old Thousand is celebrating the Year of the Rabbit's beginning with a weekend full of limited-time dishes as delicious as you know their Dope Chinese style can be. Sat., Jan. 21: Old Thousand’s Burnet location (4805 Burnet Rd.) will have specials including moo shu pork, crispy skin-on pork belly steamed bao, pork steamed buns, orange creamsicle sorbet, and red bean ice cream running all day long, with a Dragon Dance performance at 5pm. Sun., Jan. 22: The Eastside location (1000 E. 11th) will feature specials of dumplings and plant-based rabbit food, noodles and claypot rice, salt & pepper shrimp, whole fish, and ribeye – with a Dragon Dance performance at 7pm. -

PrintAustin 2023
The PrintAustin Collective was co-founded in 2013 by local printmakers Cathy Savage and Elvia Perrin to bring attention to the vibrant printmaking scene in Austin. This new play by Mattie Barber-Bockelman is about "three bros searching for an epic surf on the last day of summer." In the multimedia performance, set in a loosely imagined 2060s rich with vibes, grooves, and laughter, a group of young women riff on the surfer bro trope to examine how friendship, the pursuit of freedom, and growing up will be affected by climate catastrophe.
