Davis Gallery: Bouff! The Big Tease

New work by B. Shawn Cox is always a delight for the eyes (and a few other senses), and here the masterful painter and arch wit brings a bounty of pop philosophy with a tinge of irony (and much big hair) – inspired by lore, social identity narratives, and childhood memories of his West Texas roots. This show includes the artist's most recent explorations, including oil on fabric, paper cuts, folded paper, and digitally created lenticular collages.

    FronteraFest 2023

Austin's longest-running and most beloved performance festival returns after a two-year pandemic hiatus, presenting the work – maybe cheesy, maybe brilliant, maybe goofy, maybe badass, always unique – of actors, artists, poets, dancers, and performers of all types from Austin and Texas and beyond. This year's festival features two different showcases. The Short Fringe (works of 25 minutes or less) will run the entirety of the festival, Tue.-Sat., Jan. 17-Feb. 18, at Hyde Park Theatre (511 W. 43rd). The highest-ranked performances each week get to return to the stage on Saturday for a Best of the Week showcase. The final week of the Short Fringe is reserved for Best of the Fest, which are pieces selected from each Best of the Week; there's also a Wild Card night of pieces that final week, selected by FronteraFest staff and crew. The BYOV (Bring Your Own Venue) showcase, on the other hand, runs Jan. 29-Feb. 4, at two places that aren't HPT – and we've got those listed separately for you. NOTE: See Brenner's FronteraFest feature right here (and of course the Fest's website) for more information.

    Lunar New Year: Oseyo

Oseyo is already a dining spot we recommend highly, and this night's celebration makes that reco even stronger, with the unveiling of Patio Oseyo (redesigned with Good Union) and the reopening of their private-dining Oso Room. A complimentary glass of sparkling sake will begin the evening, persimmon tea ends the meal, and in between you can feast on such delights as dressed oysters, shrimp with perilla chimichurri, kkaennip-jeon (beef, pork, and tofu-stuffed perilla with sweet chili soy reduction), sweet and sour sticky pork ribs, haemul pajeon (savory seafood pancake), and grilled whole fish prepared with Mexican influences and kimchi mayo. And? Oseyo will debut a new dessert menu, too, with misugaru panna cotta featuring a seven-year fermented soy, a dark chocolate and doenjang fudgsicle, silken tofu cheesecake, and roasted barley and honey ice cream. Oh, and? They're also launching a new house lager, created in collaboration with Hold Out Brewing. Is this the place to be for Lunar New Year 2023? We're just sayin', OK?

    Momma, Blushing

New York’s Momma serves up Nineties alt-rock revivalism – both self-aware and tongue in cheek. The duo’s third full-length album, Household Name, aspires to live up to those ambitions, but questions the cost to get there: mocking kissing up to industry leaders on “Rip Off” and fame disillusionment on “Rockstar.” Polished and laden with hooks, the 12-song record bites through jagged song structures, distorted power-chord slabs, and breakneck fuzz. Joining the mall gig, local quartet Blushing pingpongs between one-riffed sledgehammers and crystalline reverb from last year’s sophomore Possessions.
